Senior Summit Raises $10,000 for Talbot County Department of Social Services

Talbot Community Connections (TCC) and the Talbot County Department of Social Services (TCDSS) hosted the second annual Senior Summit on Thursday, June 8, 2017 at the Talbot Community Center on Route 50 in Easton, MD. This day-long program for seniors, children of seniors, caregivers, professionals and concerned citizens provided presentations and discussions on a variety of issues that seniors face today. According to Ruth Sullivan, Talbot Community Connections President, over 100 participants attended the Senior Summit and the event included over 48 vendors/sponsors. The event raised approximately $10,000 for Talbot County Department of Social Services and the Talbot County Children’s Advocacy Center.

The keynote address, “Growing Older and Loving It,” by Keynote Speaker, Dodie Theune, PhD, helped seniors focus on embracing their aging years with new adventures. Workshop topics included Home Modifications for Fall Prevention by The Balance Center, University of Maryland Shore Regional Health; Safe at Every Age: Helping Aging Drivers Maintain Mobility and Independence by the Driver Safety Division of the Maryland Department of Transportation’s Motor Vehicle Administration; Life Reimagined by Kerry Gunshenan; Prescription Drug Misuse by the Talbot County Sheriff and Hill’s; Let’s Get Moving – Nutrition and Yoga by Food and Nutrition Services, Aramark, University of Maryland Shore Regional Health; Navigating Financial Planning for Retirement “Why Should You Make a Will?” by the Register of Wills for Talbot County; Medical Planning and Advanced Directives by the University Of Maryland Shore Regional Health; Aware & Prepare (Scams) by the Maryland Department of Human Resources.

Platinum sponsors included Regent Health, The Star Democrat, Talbot County Government, and Talbot County Department of Social Services. Gold sponsors included Talbot County Health Department and University of Maryland Shore Regional Health.
