An open hive event will be held Saturday, September 17, 2016 for anyone interested in the art and science of beekeeping.

The Delaware Beekeepers Association will host its annual event from 8:30 a.m. to noon at the Delaware State University Outreach and Research Center, 884 Smyrna-Leipsic Road, Smyrna. The rain date is September 24, 2016.

The event includes educational lectures, demonstrations, and a close-up look inside a real honeybee hive.

“Beekeeping is a fascinating and important occupation, and it’s easy to get into,” said Kathy Hossler, president of the Delaware Beekeepers Association. “Beekeepers get the benefit of delicious local honey and the satisfaction of knowing they’re helping pollinate our family farmers’ fields.”

The event is sponsored by the DBA, Delaware State University and Northeast Sustainable Agriculture Research and Education.
