Queen of the Roses 5K Walk/Run at the Harry Potter Festival
QUEEN OF THE ROSES 5K WALK/RUN EVENT
August 16, 2016
Over nine years ago, the young women of Alpha Omicron Pi sorority, Sigma Tau Chapter at Washington College, suffered a tragic loss. Jasmine Queen, a beloved sorority member from Bowie, Maryland died unexpectedly of a pulmonary embolism, just one week before moving back to campus and beginning the fall semester of her junior year.
Jasmine was a member of the varsity softball team, the Black Student Union, and Alpha Omicron Pi – she loved her Washington College community. In her honor, her sorority sisters created a 5K walk/run in Chestertown to raise money for a scholarship in her memory. All of the money raised goes directly into the Alpha Omicron Pi Foundation, which is a 501 c 3 charity, in Jasmine’s honor.
This year, the 5K walk/run event falls on the same day as the Chestertown Harry Potter Festival, Sunday, October 2nd. Event planners are collaborating with the festival organizers by encouraging 5K participants to dress in Harry Potter theme to support the fun-filled community event. The Golden Snitch will be awarded to the best Harry Potter costumed participant and event participants can select the Hogwarts house they want to represent during the run/walk (Gryffindor, Ravenclaw, Hufflepuff or Slytherin). Event refreshments will include Weasley Wizard snacks and Butterbeer (soda).
Registration opens at 10 a.m. and the race starts at 11 a.m. Chestertown’s Wilmer Park. Registration is $20 for runners/walkers registered before September 25th and $10 for college students. Register online at www.trisportsevents.com. For more information about the 5K event find us on FaceBook or contact Gabrielle Leach at 410-443-3094 or firstname.lastname@example.org.
