NO BAY BRIDGE WALK FOR 2010

Don’t go dusting off your walking shoes in anticipation of a Bay Bridge Walk this year because there won’t be one. Maryland Transportation Authority is canceling the event for the third consecutive year, citing ongoing bridge construction and the economic situation.

The first Bay Bridge Walk took place in 1975. To accommodate walkers the two-lane eastbound span was closed to traffic and two-way traffic operated on the westbound span for the duration. The westbound bridge repair is to be completed later this year, but will that allow the walk to resume in 2011? “We’ll have to evaluate it on a year-to-year basis,” Spokesman Kelly Melhem said.
