STEVENSVILLE, MD

This month’s issue of Fido Friendly Magazine named Stevensville as one of the Top 50 Fido Friendly Destinations in America. The magazine culls through nominations to bestow this annual honor based on readers’ recommendations.

Anne Arundel County resident Gregg Boersma nominated the Kent Island town because he takes his dog to Terrapin Nature Area on a regular basis. The nomination won Stevensville a place in the top 25 out of 50 destinations nationwide.

“This park offers wonderful trails and a dog-friendly beach – great for swimming and running or digging,” wrote Boersma, who lives in Arnold. “And it is just a short drive over the Bay Bridge from Annapolis which has many Fido-friendly cafes, bars and stores.”

“The Parks Department is honored by this mention,” said Gary Rzepecki, Chief of Park Operations. “We are trying to meet the needs of the dog owners in our county and it is nice to see that tourists are bringing their dogs as well.”

Fido Friendly Magazine considers itself to be a voice for the traveling canines of the world. The magazine is self described as the “Travel & Lifestyle Magazine for You & Your Dog, a complete guide to Fido-friendly accommodations across the United States and Canada.”

This is not the first dog-friendly honor given to county parks on Kent Island. Several years ago Attraction Magazine featured an article complimenting the area for also being dog-friendly. In addition to Terrapin, Kent Island has Island Dog Park, which has both small and large dog areas equipped with dog-agility apparatus. Friends of Island Dog Park is a group of local dog owners who have joined together to raise money to make improvements to the dog park such as lighting, additional benches and a shady shelter. Join their Facebook page at Friends of Kent Island Dog Park.

Matapeake Park, also in Stevensville, has a special dog beach just north of the public beach near the Matapeake Clubhouse. The meandering trail goes behind the clubhouse and through the woods to the dog beach.
