September 7, 2010
CHESTERTOWN, MD

Senior crew Caroline Hill (Tiverton, RI/Bishop Stang)has been named the captain of the Washington College sailing team, head coach Josh Putnam recently announced.

Hill recorded the highest intersectional finish of her collegiate career at last year’s Eckerd Intersectional, sailing with skipper Mike Whitford (Chicago, IL/Francis W. Parker School) to place third in B Division. Washington College finished second overall at that event. She matched her third-place B Division finish two weeks later at the Boston Dinghy Cup, again sailing with Whitford. Later in the season, she turned in her best-ever finish at a conference championship regatta, placing fourth in B Division with Whitford at the America Trophy, which serves as the Mid-Atlantic Intercollegiate Sailing Associations’s (MAISA) Spring Co-Ed Dinghy Championships. She went on to sail at the Intercollegiate Sailing Association’s (ICSA) Co-Ed Dinghy National Semifinals, placing 14th in B Division while splitting time with Mildred Conroy (Newton, MA/Tabor Academy) as Whitford’s crew.

As a sophomore, Hill finished sixth as an A Division crew at the America Trophy. During her freshman year, she placed sixth as a B Division crew at the MAISA Fall Women’s Championships.

The Washington College sailing team, which has advanced at least as far as the ICSA Co-Ed National Semifinals each of the past three seasons, opens its fall 2010 schedule this weekend at the prestigious Anderson Trophy, hosted by Yale University.

Visiting Franklin & Marshall got a match-high 23 assists and team-best nine digs from Caitlin Krutsick as the Diplomats swept host Washington College, 3-0, (31-29, 25-19, 25-19) on Tuesday night at the Cain Athletic Center in Centennial Conference volleyball action. It was also the home opener for the Shorewomen.

In the opening set, Washington had five set point chances to win the first set, but could not close out the set. With the Shorewomen leading 29-28, Sydney Seydel recorded a kill to level to set at 29-29. F&M would grab the lead at 30-29 on a hitting error by the Shorewomen and captured the set Nicole Morano kill.

In set two, WC jumped out to a 5-1 lead on an ace by sophomore defensive specialist Rita Rivera (Plymouth Meeting, PA/Plymouth-Whitemarsh). But the Diplomats won 17 of the next 21 points to take an 18-9 lead on a service ace by Krutsick.

In the third and final set, WC took a 7-5 lead on a kill by senior middle hitter Maria Whitman (Galesville, MD/Southern) on a pass from freshman setter Lauren White (Huntingtown, MD/Huntingtown). The Diplomats would go on a 19-8 spurt to take a 24-15 lead on a ball handling error by the hosts. The Shorewomen cut it to 24-19 on a kill by senior defensive specialist/libero Traci Daelemans (Tracys Landing, MD/Southern), but a service error by Washington ended the set and match.

For the visitors, Seydel pounded out a match-topping nine kills and tied for tops in the contest with three blocks. The Diplomats served up 10 aces in the win.

For Washington, White handed out a team-best 21 assists, while Rivera led all players with 11 digs. Whitman tied for Seydel in blocks with three.

Washington is back on the road on Thursday night with a 7:00 p.m. non-conference tilt at Stevenson.

An “open studio” is also offered most Wednesdays and Saturdays from noon until 3. Experienced students and artists or those taking classes may work on their own with access to state-of-the-art-studio equipment and facilities when a monitor is present.
Because classes are small, usually no more than 6 people, some flexibility in scheduling is possible. The program is supported by a grant from the Maryland State Arts Council, an agency dedicated to cultivating a vibrant cultural community where the arts thrive.
Artworks Clay Studio instructors are accomplished artists and teachers on the Eastern Shore.
Artworks has the only public clay facility on the Upper Eastern Shore.

Full details on Clay Studio classes, fees, and instructors are available on the web site, www.artworkschestertown.org. A brochure is also available by calling Artworks at 410-778-6300.

Hours for the gift shop, office, and gallery are Wednesday through Friday, 12-3 and Saturday, 9-3. For more information on classes, membership, or shows, call or visit the web site.

TOWSON, MD

Junior goalkeeper Tori Ripple (Baltimore, MD/John Carroll) saved a shot by Goucher’s Sisley Pumilia with two seconds left in the second overtime to preserve a 1-1 tie for the Washington College women’s soccer team in its season opener. Host Goucher improved to 0-1-1 on the season with the tie.

Goucher took a 1-0 lead just 1:36 into the contest as Shay Kettner scored from the top of the box off an assist from Pumilia. The Gophers would not take another shot until the 33:15 mark, while the Shorewomen fired off ten unanswered shots, but could not find the back of the net. Goucher brought its 1-0 lead into halftime.

Sophomore forward Ainsley Boynton (Radnor, PA/Westtown School) evened the score for Washington when she booted in a rebound off her own shot at 56:24. Neither team would score again before the end of regulation; Washington junior midfielder Gabby Devaud (Baltimore, MD/Institute of Notre Dame) took the last shot of the half, at 88:10, but it went wide. Goucher had a corner kick at 89:50, but could not convert before the horn.

The only shot of the first overtime came at 94:24 when WC sophomore forward Katie Bradley (Havre de Grace, MD/Fallston) fired a shot high over the goal.

Junior defender/midfielder Jennifer Kiarsis (Rye, NY/Canterbury School [CT]) took the first shot of the second overtime, the Shorewomen’s 20th of the game, at 103:05, but Goucher goalkeeper Kellen Matthews made the save. Devaud took a shot at 105:48, but Matthews made another save. Matthews made her third save of the second overtime on a Bradley shot at 107:24. Goucher’s Katherine Matthew-Parker had a shot blocked with 16 seconds left before Ripple made the save on Pumilia’s shot to preserve the draw.

Washington held a 22-11 advantage in shots in the game, while Goucher enjoyed an 8-4 edge in corner kicks. Matthews made 11 saves for the Gophers, while Ripple made five for the Shorewomen.

The Shorewomen return to action Wednesday with a 7:00 p.m. game at Neumann University.

SALISBURY, MD

A tornado changed the course of Sean Smith’s life.

While on a family trip in high school, the senior Salisbury University geography major from St. Leonard, MD, saw the funnel cloud in person—far enough away that it did not harm his family, but close enough that he immediately wanted to learn more about what caused the storm. This began his deep-rooted fascination with weather. Upon graduating from SU, he hopes to become a meteorologist.

While Smith’s inspiration literally struck in an instant, not all science-based career choices come so easily. That’s where the new program “Science Nights at SU” comes into play.

High school juniors and seniors in Wicomico and Worcester counties considering careers in the growing fields of science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) may be eligible to attend the program this academic year. The free series begins Tuesday, October 5, as experts present information on research and career options in earth science. All Science Night presentations are 6:30-8 p.m. in Henson Science Hall Room 103.

“Keep an open mind,” advises Jaleesa Tate, a junior SU geography major, encouraging those interested in attending to consider how a science education could help them in their preferred career fields. “Even though you’ll probably choose only one major in college, you can do a lot of different things with that major.”

The Mobile, AL, native is studying two tracks within her major—geographic information systems and land use planning—in hopes of pursuing a master’s degree and becoming a city planner.

“People think all we do is make maps,” she said. “What I want to do isn’t about maps—it’s about people.”

SU senior Julia Cunningham is not a STEM major at all, but an elementary education major who became interested in earth science after taking a particularly inspiring class at the University.

“It opened my eyes to the other classes I could take, and I got really interested in it,” she said.

Though she hopes to pursue a career teaching second grade, she knows her STEM education may be beneficial in the future, especially if she later chooses to teach middle school grades, where there is a shortage of science and mathematics teachers.

Smith, Tate and Cunningham will be among the presenters at Science Nights at SU. Interested high school students must fill out an application, available online at www.salisbury.edu/henson/stem/sciencenights, and complete a 250-word essay describing their reasons for wanting to participate. Students also should provide a list of all science and mathematics classes they have taken or are currently taking.

Students will be notified of their selection to attend. Applications must be signed by a parent, and each attending student must have a parent or guardian present at the event. Parents will meet with professors and SU STEM alumni for question-and-answer sessions about science majors and careers.

Forms and essays should be sent to Dr. Brent Zaprowski, Henson Science Hall Room 157N, Salisbury University, 1101 Camden Ave., Salisbury, MD 21801. Application materials are due by Friday, September 24.

Participants have the option of coming to more than one session. Those attending at least five sessions earn a $25 gift card to the SU Bookstore.

Upcoming topics for the fall semester include:
• Tuesday, October 26: chemistry
• Tuesday, November 16: physics
• Tuesday, December 7: computer science

Spring semester topics include engineering, atmospheric science, mathematics and biology. Dates will be announced.

For more information call 410-677-5308, e-mail bjzaprowski@salisbury.edu or visit the SU Web site at www.salisbury.edu.
