September 1, 2010

The Island Cottage Collection, located at 6208 Maddox Blvd., Chincoteague Island, Virginia is featuring an “Island Style Festival” for the upcoming September 11th “2nd Saturday Art Stroll on Chincoteague Island”.

The “Stroll” takes place from 6pm to 10pm at various locations around the island. Honored guest, Barbara Jacksier will be signing her book, Waterside Cottages.

Jacksier is a nationally recognized writer and editor for Cottage Style, Country Victorian, and Romantic Living magazines.

Waterside Cottages showcases romantic waterside havens from coast to coast. Cottages near the water tend to be snug and modest, with exteriors painted in sun-reflecting whites, nautical blues, or playful colors. The interiors of these houses likewise avoid formality in favor of a casual approach.

Waterside Cottages takes you to tidy New England beach cottages with bright tropical bungalows to a boathouse on the steep pine-studded banks of Michigan’s Kalamazoo River. Waterside Cottages defines the attributes of successful coastal decorating, so that anyone, anywhere, can create a casual waterfront atmosphere, even when the nearest body of water is a thousand miles away.

Come celebrate the joys of cottage style with Barbara Jacksier.

Joining the celebration is island artist, Lucy Roehm who will be exhibiting “Chincoteague Summer Memories” a collection of her recent paintings in the gallery.

Tie dye artist Jennifer Forrester will be creating “Sea Glass” inspired T-Shirts. Bring your own shirt or purchase one and create a “Sea Glass” tie dye work of art.

Painter Linda Kantjas will be exhibiting her miniature Chincoteague pony paintings. For fun, have your face painted “with island style” by Vicky Layman.

Complimentary refreshments will be served. Questions…please call 757-336-5636.

Accomack County, as it is today, was last formally established in 1671. In 1634 the Eastern Shore of Virginia was one of the original eight shires of Virginia and was name Accomac Shire after the Native American word Accawacke, which means “across the water”. The British decided to eliminate ‘heathen’ names in the New World and the Shire was renamed Northampton.

In 1663 the shire was split into two counties with the northern county assuming the original Accomac name. The county was abolished in 1670 only to be reestablished in 1671. It wasn’t until 1940 that the “k” was officially added to the spelling of the county’s name.

The very first Sheriff in what is now called the United States was William Stone, who was appointed to serve Accomack County in 1634.

Accomac is the county seat of Accomack County. In 1693 the Accomack County courthouse was moved from Onancock to a site at Matomkin. The town was established in 1786 with the name Drummond. In 1893 the town was renamed Accomac. Even today some locals will still refer to the town as Drummond.

Many of the incorporated towns of the Virginia Eastern Shore had their origins because of the railroad. Bloxom, Belle Haven, Hallwood, Keller, Melfa, Painter and Parksley are a few of those towns. Parksley is the home of th Eastern Shore Railroad Museum and in many ways the town still has the character of an 1880′s railroad town.

With as much shore line as Virginia’s Eastern Shore has, there is also a history of life on the water for Accomack County. Chincoteague is a family resort island town that is famous for the Chincoteague ponies. Each year the Volunteer Fire Company auction Wild Ponies from Assateague Island as part of their annual fundraising as well as holding an annual carnival.

ONANCOCK, VA

The fifth annual Music for the Hungry will be held on Saturday, July 17, 2010, from 12:00 to 8:00 p.m., on the grounds of the historic Onancock School to benefit the Foodbank on the Eastern Shore. The daylong event will feature a variety of foods, beverages, Zumba demonstrations, local artists and games for the kids, including a moon bounce, waterslide, crafts and airbrush tattoos. Two stages will feature non-stop musical entertainment from eleven different groups. New to the event will be a BBQ cookoff between several restaurants on the Shore including Mallards, Blarney Stone, Annie’s, Becca’s and Big’s.

“Our goal, this year, is to raise $10,000. We want to make a difference,” said Johnny Mo, the event founder. “As a chef and musician I get to combine my two passions and support the families in our community who are served through the Foodbank.”

Chef Johnny Mo teamed up with the Foodbank over five years ago and started Music for the Hungry in an effort to help fill in the food gap for young children on the Eastern Shore. “The majority of children on the Eastern Shore receive free or reduced meals during the school year,” he said, “ but when summer comes and the kids are out of school, many families struggle to fill in the gap that the Foodbank provides through its’ food distribution programs.”

“Music for the Hungry comes at the right time for us,” said Charmin Horton, Branch Manager of the Foodbank in Tasley. “Summertime is the hardest time of the year to keep the Foodbank pantry stocked. By August and September our shelves will be depleted. We continue to see an increase in the number of families that need assistance and children are at risk if they do not have nutritious food as they develop and grow. Children should not go hungry in the summer on the Eastern Shore.”

Musical guests will include Snackbar Jones from Hampton Roads, QuadPod, Southbound, Trinity, Melinda and the Benders, Phillip and Friends, Gravy, Mark Alan Linton, Ted Cathey, Timmy Mo, and Randy Lee Ashcraft from Salisbury.

The Onancock School is located at 6 College Avenue in Onancock, Virginia. Admission is just $5 per person and children under 10 years old are free. Attendees are encouraged to bring lawn chairs.

The Foodbank on the Eastern Shore is a branch of the Foodbank of Southeastern Virginia. The Foodbank of Southeastern Virginia is a proud member of the Federation of Virginia Food Banks and Feeding America, the Nation’s Food Bank Network.

Onancock was founded in 1680 as a port-of-entry town. The town was first called Port Scarborough with its beginnings on the headwaters of Onancock Creek. Onancock, in the language of the Native American’s mean “Foggy Place.”

In 1681 Daniel Jenifer developed a grid plan for the Eastern Shore’s official port-of-entry. The creek was a link to transportation, trade and communications in the early days of the town.

A courthouse was built and placed in service until 1693 when it was moved to Accomac, its present location.

During the two centuries where the waterways were the prime pathways of transportation the town square served as the mainstream of life for the town. It was one of the major stops for passenger and freight steamboats in the late 19th century.

The railroad was two miles from the town and with it was the beginning of a slow decline as a port. Steamships continued passenger and freight service into the 1930s.

The town is still small and it’s an easy walk to most parts of the town. Onancock is the second largest community on the Eastern Shore of Virginia and three centuries after its founding the remodeled old wharf is still in use with daily ferry trips between there and Tangier Island in the summer.
