September 3, 2010

Test results received by Delaware’s Division of Public Health (DPH) indicate that a New Castle County female became the second Delawarean to develop the rare vancomycin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (VRSA) infection. The first was positively identified in April 2010. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), this brings the national case number to 12. The CDC is doing further testing of this latest case.

VRSA is a type of antimicrobial-resistant staph bacteria. While most staph bacteria are susceptible to the antimicrobial agent vancomycin, VRSA has developed resistance and cannot be successfully treated with this drug. However, to date, other Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved drugs are successful in treating the infection.

CDC findings indicate that persons developing VRSA infections are those who have several underlying health conditions such as diabetes or kidney disease or have had previous staph infections, been hospitalized, had tubes going into their bodies or recent exposure to vancomycin or other microbial agents. DPH’s disease investigations conclude that both Delaware cases were being medically treated for multiple underlying health conditions. While the CDC has not documented VRSA to be communicable, as a precaution DPH investigates close contacts of these individuals and they are advised of VRSA precautions, prevention and resources.

DPH continues to encourage health professionals to use appropriate infection control practices, such as frequent hand washing and masks when medically indicated, to reduce the spread of VRSA. Judicious use of antibiotics will also help to reduce the development and spread of resistant organisms such as VRSA.

For more information about VRSA, please visit www.cdc.gov

The First State Heritage Park will once again call attention to The Green’s prominence as plans are shaping up for a market fair to be held on Saturday, November 6 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Like many 18th century towns, Dover was the scene of market fairs each autumn. Goods were sold and exchanged and entertainment was offered on The Green. During the market fair, you can explore the goods and wares that were available to 18th century residents and hear tales of the French Revolution and of French lacemaking from Monsieur LeFarceur de Villeverte. Enjoy songs, anecdotes and Revolutionary tea lore with historical balladeer and tea interpreter Stacy Flora Roth of History on the Hoof. At 2 p.m. that day, you can experience a new walking tour titled “Spirits and Spices and Silks to Buy!” Meet in front of the John Bell House, currently under renovation, on The Green. Hear stories of 18th and 19th century Dover merchants and tradesmen such as Vincent Loockerman, John Bullen and John Banning, and learn about the goods available to Dover residents of the day.

Chrysanthemum Festival
November 1 – November 21, chrysanthemums take center stage at Longwood Gardens. During this festival, more than 200,000 chrysanthemums are arranged in amazing configurations inside the four-acre indoor Conservatory. Cascades of chrysanthemums drape the walls while spiral chrysanthemum forms climb skyward towards a towering, three-tier chandelier constructed of vibrant yellow chrysanthemums hanging from the Conservatory ceiling. Outside, blooming chrysanthemums, gorgeous gourds and giant pumpkins decorate the grounds. For more information, go to www.longwoodgardens.org or www.visitwilmingtonde.com.

Return Day
This event has been a Sussex County tradition since possibly as early as 1792, taking place in Georgetown every other year during an election year. The event will take place on November 4 around the Georgetown Circle where election results will be announced among vendors, food stations, entertainment and the always-popular Return Day Parade (which included Vice President Joe Biden after the 2008 presidential election). The dramatic “Burial of the Tomahawk” by Sussex County’s party chairmen will officially end Delaware’s political season.
World Championship Punkin Chunkin
Featured on the Discovery Channel and Science Channel, Punkin Chunkin is an event that has become an autumn tradition well beyond its Sussex County roots. Taking place November 5-7 in Bridgeville, the world championship title will be up for grabs as teams compete in hurling and propelling pumpkins thousands of feet into the event fields. In addition to the Chunk, the event includes a Chili Cook-Off Contest and Pumpkin Cooking Contest, vendors, food stations, and live entertainment. This year’s festival will take place November 10-14 throughout Rehoboth Beach and will showcase approximately 100 of the best American and international films including features, documentaries, and shorts.

August 26, 2010
St. Georges, DE

Governor Jack Markell and Transportation Secretary Carolann Wicks were joined today by Federal and state officials, and bicycle advocates at a ceremony to recognize the newly completed bike lanes on the St. Georges Bridge across the Chesapeake & Delaware Canal. Governor Markell led the excited group of cyclists on the 2.5 mile ride over the bridge and back.

Senator Thomas R. Carper, Congressman Michael N. Castle, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers District Commander, Lt. Philip Secrist, and Amy Wilburn, Chair of the Delaware Bicycle Council took part in the event on the grounds of the Commodore MacDonough School, where they discussed why it is so vital to provide infrastructure for more than just cars.

“These bike lanes are a testament to the power of the community to work together with state and federal government to find practical solutions,” Governor Markell explained. “Enabling cyclists to cross this bridge safely helps promote public health, protect our environment, and improve quality of life to make Delaware more attractive to employers.”

“Anyone who has renovated an old home knows too well the challenges of making changes to an existing structure,” said Secretary Wicks. “Fortunately, this bridge has good bones. Like most of our roads and bridges they were designed and built well in the first place, so with a little coaxing, we can change them to serve the next century as well as they served the last century.”

“Many Delawareans have no other option than to use their cars, trucks, and vans for every trip,” said Senator Carper. “Today we are providing them with additional options. By adding bike lanes to the St. Georges Bridge – for recreational bikers or those looking for a way to commute back and forth to work -we are reducing congestion, improving our air quality, and giving people an opportunity to get some great exercise.”

Congressman Castle also said the bike lanes are an opportunity for Delawareans. “I am proud to be a part of the bike ride to celebrate the new bicycle lanes on the St. Georges Bridge, which will unquestionably enable Delawareans to enjoy and explore the C & D Canal, Lums Pond and other recreational facilities in the area,” he said. “Living an active lifestyle is the best way to promote health and I applaud Governor Markell and the Army Corps of Engineers for making this bike path a reality.”

The Corps of Engineers owns the bridge and financed the recent repair project of the bridge. “This project is just another example of the great working relationship between the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Philadelphia
District and the state of Delaware,” said Lt. Col. Secrist, Together, we identified a need for bike lanes and made it a reality. It’s truly a sign of the cooperativeness and hard work of our organizations employees.”

Representing the bicycling community, which lobbied hard for these lanes, was Amy Wilburn, Chair of Delaware Bicycle Council. “A safe crossing over the C&D Canal has been one of the bicycling community’s major goals for over twenty years,” Wilburn said. “This is a great day for bicyclists in Delaware and a milestone along the road to making our state a green and bike friendly place to live.”

August 26, 2010
DOVER, DE

DNREC and elected officials, Delaware Greenways, Inc., DelDOT and other trail users and advocates today marked the completion of major “missing links” that finish almost all of the Northern Delaware Greenway Trail – the nearly nine-mile long trail that connects several state and county parks in the Wilmington area. The newest section, about half a mile long, connects Brandywine Park to Alapocas Run State Park.

“Creating areas like the Northern Delaware Greenway Trail improves our quality of life and makes Delaware more attractive to employers,” said Governor Jack Markell. “The achievement of this milestone reflects hard work, as well as cooperation between state agencies and community organizations. Thank you and congratulations to the teams who helped out.”

“It’s been a long time coming, but we are pleased to announce the completion of several significant links of the Northern Delaware Greenway Trail,” said DNREC Secretary Collin O’Mara, “I want to thank our partners for accelerating the completion of this important project, including Delaware Greenways and its volunteers, legislators, and all other trail advocates. It couldn’t have happened without all of their help.”

“Not only does the completion of the trail enhance recreation and fitness opportunities and increase public safety, it also and helps reduce air pollution,” said Charles Salkin, director of DNREC’s Division of Parks and Recreation. “It’s now possible, for example, for someone who lives in Wilmington and works anywhere along the Northern Delaware Greenway Trail, to bike to work. The completion of the trail contributes to more livable and walkable communities,” Salkin added.

One trail section, which runs parallel to Alapocas Drive, connects sidewalks from the Alapocas neighborhood. The trail is 700 feet long and includes a 70-foot long steel bridge over Alapocas Run. The second trail section was constructed after DNREC acquired conservation easements to make the connection to Brandywine Zoo.

The nine-mile-long Northern Delaware Greenway Trail starts at Fox Point State Park and connects Bellevue State Park, New Castle County’s Bringhurst Woods and Rockwood Parks, Rock Manor Golf Course, Alapocas Run State Park and Brandywine Park.

“Completion of a ‘start to finish’ signage system for the Northern Delaware Greenway Trail is an important turning point for this project,” said Mark Chura, Executive Director of Delaware Greenways, Inc, a non-profit trail advocacy organization. “It took 20 years, and involvement from many, many people including citizen activists, government officials and community leaders, to acquire the land and build this trail network. The new signs and stencils mark the beginning of a new effort to build awareness of this amazing facility, and get families and those that work adjacent to the trail walking and hiking it as part of a healthy lifestyle. We are grateful to Delaware Greenway volunteers, Delaware State Parks staff and Representative Tom Kovach, who provided the funding for the new signage, for all their efforts”

The completion of the trail also designates the Northern Delaware Greenway Trail as a portion of the East Coast Greenway route through Delaware. The East Coast Greenway Alliance is a regional trail advocacy organization that has envisioned a trail running from Maine to Florida connecting major urban areas.

“Linking these beautiful parks creates a continuous trail that the people of Delaware can safely enjoy for their daily commute and weekend recreation,” said Dennis Markatos-Soriano, executive director of the East Coast Greenway Alliance. “This progress maintains Delaware’s status as a leader among its peers in developing a safe, accessible East Coast Greenway from Canada to Florida. Congratulations to DNREC, DelDOT and everyone involved in this big step forward.”
