The Cinema & Art series presents a screening of the acclaimed documentary Ai Weiwei: Never Sorry on Wednesday, October 3, at The INN at Canal Square, 122 Market Street in Lewes. This new and exciting documentary tells the story of one of the worlds’ most idolized and influential Chinese artists, Ai Weiwei. A reception with light refreshments begins at 6:30 pm, followed by the film screening at 7:00 pm and then a post-screening discussion. This event is sponsored by the Rehoboth Beach Film Society, Rehoboth Art League, and The INN at Canal Square.

Ai Weiwei is China’s most famous international artist, and its most outspoken domestic critic. Against a backdrop of strict censorship and an unresponsive legal system, Ai expresses himself through art and social media. Chinese authorities demonstrate their disapproval of his actions with multiple incarcerations, beatings, and bulldozing his newly built studio. “Ai Weiwei: Never Sorry” is the inside story of an influential man and artist who inspires global audiences while pushing the boundaries of art and politics.

First-time director Alison Klayman gained access to Ai while working as a journalist in China and her detailed portrait provides an exploration of contemporary China and one of its most compelling public figures. Kenneth Turan of the Los Angeles Times states that, “Watching Ai Weiwei: Never Sorry is like experiencing a thrilling unfinished symphony: The story is enthralling, but it’s not over, and there’s no telling where it’s going which makes what we see on screen all the more involving.” [2012, China, Runtime: 91 min., Rated: R.
